When he was still a teenager, René Pöckl started to create his first wine. Freed from the constraints of the existing line-up of cuvées, he was able to experiment with his very own Rêve de Jeunesse.
He dropped the levels of native Zweigelt and pushed international varieties, like Syrah, into the blend. It created a slight issue in the early years as the authorities didn’t authorise Syrah in Austria and so the wine did not receive an official ‘Wine of Austria’ stamp, instead having to use ‘Landwein’ on the labels.
The grapes used for Rêve de Jeunesse grow on gravel, heavy clay and sand; the 2019 vintage is a blend of Zweigelt (15%), Merlot (30%), Syrah (25%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%).
After the harvest the wine matures in new barriques for 20 months

CRITIC RATINGS
97 FalstaffThe nose is complex with fine herbal spices, dark forest berries, blackberries, black cherries, candied orange zest, wood smoke and liquorice. The wine is juicy and complex on the palate, with ripe cherries and plums, well-integrated tannins, and a long dark fruit and chocolate aftertaste. A wine that can easily age for a couple of decades yet.
Superb with strong, hearty meat dishes, like beef and lamb.
