The “Admiral” has been an iconic wine from Pöckl for 30 years. Named after the butterfly native to the vineyards, it was initially developed as a pure varietal wine based on Zweigelt. Over the years the cuvée has been refined with varying proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, depending on the vintage. The 2019 vintage is made up of 60% Zweigelt, 25% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The grapes for this wine grow on a mixture of loamy, gravel soils and sandy soils. The wine is matured in 100% new barrique barrels for 18 months after the harvest.

CRITIC RATINGS
Falstaff: 96On the expressive nose comes smoked wood, candied orange zest, concentrated blackberry, liquorice notes, and hints of nougat. On the palate, the wine is juicy and elegant, with ripe dark cherries, fine tannins that are beautifully integrated into the mouthfeel, and leaving a persistent and fresh finish, with long lasting flavours of sweet black fruits and oak spice. Approachable now or suitable for long ageing.
Pairs well with roast beef, lamb or venison, as well as strong cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère and old mountain cheese.
