A major factor that helps South Styrian wines gain their unique aromas and flavours is the large diversity of soils. The stunning Welles vineyard has a stony subsoil underneath sand and gravel topsoil spread across a steep mountain ridge at an altitude of 510 meters above sea level. This ensures maximum sunlight interception, a high diurnal range, and exposure to strong winds that reduce any threat of disease allowing for organic viticulture and drives the Sauvignon Blanc vines from Welles to peak performance. The grapes ripen slowly and thus develop particularly spicy, multi-layered aromas.

In 2019 the harvest took place in perfect weather, with sunny days and cool nights. The grapes were harvested in the first week of October by hand. After a skin-contact-maceration of 18 hours, the grapes were gently pressed and the juice was racked directly to large oak barrels where it underwent a slow fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine rested in barrels on fine lees for 24 months.

Lackner Tinnacher have always focused on limiting yields for full flavour concentration. All vineyard work is carried out manually, including harvesting which is exclusively by hand.
